I did this with an incense stick, on a non reflective black background (I used my flash).
Then, in Photoshop, I ajusted the levels and the curves to get a really black background (because it came out a little gray). After I inverted the image and start playing with Hue/Saturation or one of the other color adjustment tools. I had so much fun doing this !
