We went on an excursion that we highly recommend near the city of Palmer (about an hour's drive from our cabin in Willow). You start out riding in a lifted 4x4 van for about 20 minutes across a dry river bed valley (including DRIVING across the river a few times in low spots). Then you change to a boat and go for a 20-min high speed ride until you get to where the Knik Glacier ends and the Knik River begins, with icebergs floating around you. You get off the boat there for roughly 90 mins, walking around the land area, enjoying a nice hot cup of coffee and bag of trail mix, and then you reverse it. In all, the excursion takes about 3 hours and we thought it was well worth it.
A Guest left a Comment on this gallery, along with a link to some pictures he took (from the air) of this same glacier a year before. This last winter the area our cabin was in had a "snow drought", only getting a cumulative 3' of snow, compared to their normal 11-14' of snow. His flight over this same glacier area was a year before, after a typical winter. Check out his (BEAUTIFUL) aerial photos of this portion of Alaska: https://pbase.com/longbachnguyen/image/155493844 Wow, what a DIFFERENCE!
