This small gathering of tents was adjacent to the parking lot we parked in before hiking a few miles up the beach and back (both along the water's edge and at times on a trail that was more inland. In all, our excursion took us 3 hours, leaving at 8:00 a.m. By the time we decided to turn around, it was solely due to the high heat, which in turned heated the sand that we walked on even hotter! We had left our shoes in the car, so were barefoot. Both of us are usually tender-footed to begin with, but the sand's high heat plus the roughness of some of the trails/pebbles/rocks we had to walk on at times, made our feet SO SORE by the time we finally made it back to our car. My advice to you if you choose to hike up (or down) the beach on a day when the temp is 100-degrees, definitely wear/(carry) shoes and use them! However, that being said, I still love seeing the beauty I captured that day on our hike!
