Their church started a program years ago that Herman & Marie were involved with. They spent one hour a week for a whole year mentoring a 6-year-old. When that year was over, Herman kept on going with William and continued until just recently when his health took a downturn. Instead of one year of mentoring once/week, they mentored William TEN years and treated him like he was part of their family. William gave a small speech during the funeral, saying how much Herman meant to him.
