Clingman's Dome is the highest elevation within the 800 square miles of the GSMNP. We drove to the parking lot for it, then walked up the remaining 1/2-mile sidewalk to get to the "Dome", then walked up it and took photos around the different directions. Although our car's temperature said it was 46 degrees (in the parking lot), it was a lot colder up at the actual (higher elevation) dome, plus the wind was really strong! We were in shorts and had white "frost" coming out of our mouths when speaking up there. However, the scenery was breathtaking so the climb up (& back down) was worth it, only we tried walking as fast as possible, even though our bodies aren't used to walking such steep in clines, or in that low of temperature (not dressed properly for it), or the high altitude to begin with. So, although we TRIED walking really fast, we felt lethargic and that 1/2 mile steep walk UP and then back down couldn't seem to go by fast enough.
