Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan

Grasslands National Park is at the south end of Saskatchewan. Before the coming of European settlers and the plough in the late 1800's, native grass prairie covered much of central and southern Saskatchewan. The Park is a wilderness preserve of dry climate, mixed short grass habitat and coulees in the Kildeer Badlands and in the Frenchman River Valley. The preserve encompasses 900 square kilometers. The major grasses are blue gramma, needle-and-thread, and western wheatgrass. Fossil sites show exposed Cretaceous sea bed and shoreline strata. There are no man-made recreational amenities in the Park. Upon enetering, visitors are warned of the hazards and the need for self-sufficiency, are asked to not disturb the animals or the habitat, and to practice no-trace camping. In the stark absence of any cues of modern civilization, the pristine solitude transports the imagination back to when buffalo and native Indians roamed here not long ago. After an afternoon and evening in the natural ambiance, sunrise in the Park feels like the beginning of time.
