Tricholoma atroviolaceum

Cowlitz Falls Day Use Area, Gifford Pinchot National Forest, WA

This fall-fruiting Tricholoma with the photo example genetically confirmed to species, features a cap that is convex at first but flattens with age and may split radially. The caps, ranging from 4-10 cm across are densely covered with fine scales that are blackish centrally to gray-violet or brownish towards the margin. Caps are dry and give off a farinaceous odor. The gills are sinuate, notched and typically gray and may have a darker margin. The stipes are solid and tough, up to 14 cm tall and 1.4 cm across. They are cylindrical and equal or enlarging towards the base. It is a fairly common terrestrial conifer forest species in the PNW that should not be consumed.
