Scarlet Cup or Scarlet Elf Cup
A cup fungus in the family Sarcoscyphaceae in the order Pezizales, it is a saprobe on dead branches and twigs of fallen hardwood trees. It is especially common on oak and fruits in the dead of winter through spring. It certainly brightens an otherwise uninspiring forest floor at that time of the year. The cups are usually 2-4 cm broad, with a deep scarlet fertile interior surface and finely tomentose white or pinkish exterior. They are attached by a nonexistent to short and rudimentary tapering stipe. They are said to be edible, but too few and too small to be of much interest to the mycophagist.
