Gymnopus androsaceus

Gig Harbor, Washington

Horsehair Fungus
This fungus is recognized by its small reddish-brown caps on a long, tough and wiry black or dark brown stalk. It favors conifer debris. Numerous black rhizomorphs can be seen in the duff at the base of the stalk, though not apparent in this photo. The gills are buff to brownish and typically subdistant. Caps only reach a width of 1cm, with stipes up to 6cm.
