Blackening Russula, Blackening Brittlegill
Our PNW white species that turns black without any intervening red phase has long been misidentified and called Russula albonigra, a European name that has recently been split into 5 subtly different European species. Our species may in fact be several distinct white-to-black species, but none are genetically close to the European species. For now it goes by the atrata specific epithet.
