Suillus ampliporus

East of Chinook Pass, Highway 410, Washington

(Suillus cavipes)
Western Hollow Jack
This larch tree affiliate is easily recognized by its hollowed out lower stem, discernible when the stem is split lengthwise. The cap is brown and densely hairy, giving it a velvet feel. The pores are yellow and do not stain with bruising. Th stalk is smooth and yellow above an evanescent ring and brown below. It is a decent edible.
