Armillaria sinapina

Olympic National Park, Washington

Common name: Honey mushroom. This handsome species grows often from buried wood or woody debris on the ground but just as often from the sides of logs or trees. Growing in clusters or large troops, it has a scaly cap and stalk, ring or ring zone and a stalk that looks stuffed with cottony material. It is just as edible as Armillaria solidipes (ostoyae) but is differentiated by yellowish partial veil remnants found at the base or at the ring zone (as here). If eaten, the stalks should be discarded. Some people love this one, others are unimpressed. Cook thoroughly and slowly over low heat.

Nice photo. Perhaps you should write a mushroom book.
