Our original plan was to drive from Truchtlaching north to the Baltic, then spend a few days along the Baltic coast. But as we drove away, we got to thinking how far it was and how little time we actually had left. Since we like to drive slowly, staying on small secondary roads and making many stops, we typically made very few miles each day, so it was problematic that we could even make it to the Baltic before we would have to leave. We drove back and forth through Truchtlaching three times trying to decide what to do next. We finally decided to stay in southern Germany for the remainder of the trip - we can always see the rest on a later trip.
We looked for a place close to Munich to use as a base of operations where we could take day-trips to the various Bavarian points of interest. We picked Herrsching on the Ammersee.
