Costa Maya, the second stop on our cruise, is a relatively undeveloped area of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, just north of Belize. The cruise ship terminal is about two miles from the little fishing village of Mahahual, but there's not much else there. We rented a golf cart and drove to Mahahual, then continued several miles further down the beach. The area was hit hard by Hurricane Dean in 2007, and there is still a lot of evidence of the extensive destruction it suffered. Most of the lush vegetation near the beach was also badly damaged or killed. The beaches are beautiful, and there were many birds. We spotted 16 different species, including two we had never seen before.
