The American Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) has been the national emblem of the United States since 1782. Adult wing span is about 7 feet, with a weight ranging from 7 to 15 pounds. It can reach speeds of up to 100 MPH when diving, and is one of the world's largest raptors (Birds of prey).Breeding bald eagles typically lay one to three eggs once a year, and they hatch after about 35 days. The young eagles are flying within three months, but they will continue to use their nest as a "home base" where their parents continue to care for them for an additional 4-6 weeks.
