MALE MANTLED HOWLER MONKEY (Alouatta palliata) IMG_0195

Corcovado NP - Osa Peninsula

Howler monkeys are named and known for the loud, gutteral roars that they routinely emit at the beginning and end of each day. They are the loudest animal in the neotropics, and their vocalizations travel several miles through dense forest. They have enlarged hyoid bones, and the males have large throat sacs, which serve to amplify the sound.
