A tropical falcon version (in the same family as falcons) of a vulture, the Crested Caracara reaches the United States only in Arizona, Texas and Florida. It is a bird of open country, where it is sometimes seen at carrion with vultures. It is classified as threatened in Florida,with only about 200 known breeding pairs, but is common and widespread throughout the neotropics (Central and South America).
