RED-LEGGED SERIEMA (Cariama cristata)

LPZ

The most striking feature of this mostly ground-dwelling species is their crest, which is unique among South American birds. It is comprised of permanently raised, slightly stiff feathers at the base of the bill, that can reach over four inches in length. Seriemas are one of the few birds with eyelashes. Their unique call resembles that of a yelping puppy.

Great inage, Larry. Shot him in London Zoo, but no where as good as this one! The lashes are because they are ground dwelling, it keeps the sun off the eyes as they are browsing, much like our Ground Hornbils and Secretary birds, V
