The black-cheekrd woodpecker is a breeding resident from southeastern Mexico to Ecuador. This species occurs in the higher levels of wet forest, semi-open woodlands and old second growth. It feeds on insects, but will take substantial quantities of fruit and nectar. The binomial commemorates French zoologist Jacques Pucheran.
