Jasper Cabin, 2024 to Present

Introduction

For 2024 we stayed at a new cabin in Marshall. From 2012-2021 we used to stay at "Dogwood Springs Cabin," and it fit us very well--the owners were laid-back, not worrying if our kids were in the pool if their own older kids were also around (the kids even volunteered to do this), and just friendly overall. However in 2020 they sold to a new owner who wasn't as easy-going as they'd been; in 2021, they sold out again, and the new owners were even more this way, going so far as to shut down the waterslide altogether due to "insurance reasons," I later learned in 2022 they'd even closed the pool entirely. That did it for me, especially since the kitchens had always been small and a real pain in the neck to deal with. The pool/slide, and our kids being able to just help themselves to it without them worrying about legal liabilities, had always been the appeal, and it was gone now. Time to look elsewhere.

We found some real nice cabins in the Marshall area, huge and plenty of room, near Highway 65, and the creek even ran through it, so you could fish without even leaving, and it was PLENTY roomy. However it was somewhat more expensive, and probably overkill unless KSG or my mother etc also joined us. I managed to instead find a place about the same price as before, and right in Jasper, but one nestled in the woods with a larger kitchen, something I'd always wanted all along. I was satisfied with it, pleased even.

New Cabin for 2024

For 2024, I was of a mind to simply return there and "run it back" as it were, but my wife wanted something else, mainly as much as anything to have us not be necessarily in Jasper and the same places anymore, sort of "freshen things up." She went looking far and wide for cabins, but none of them did anything for me, they were either too expensive, in an area I didn't know anything about (or too far from anything we were familiar with), and I became irritated and was really of a mind to have her stop looking all over the place in vain and just have us stay in the same one we'd stayed at in 2022 and be done with it.

She finally find one which looked interesting--lower price, but with enough room and amenities (especially a full sized kitchen with a dining room etc and 2 bedrooms), secluded, and it had good reviews. It was in Marshall, near many of the spots we'd gone to prior, but different enough from years past to seem "fresh" as it were. Although Airbnb prevented me from getting an exact location from the hosts prior to booking or arriving, the address was in one of the photos, and between that and doing a "satellite" view of that area and comparing it to the photos shown, I figured out where it was on my own anyway.
Since the year prior in 2023 while visiting Alabama, the cabin which was supposed to be like this turned out to have another cabin right next to it, and had a very bumpy road leading to it, we decided to go on an additional trip in June (prior to the "normal" one in July) so as to make sure it was suitable for what we intended to do in July. I didn't want us (or KSG) coming here for our "main" vacation in July and being disappointed.

Not to worry. It was everything we'd hope for--roomy enough, secluded, well off the road (which was gravel anyway, and quiet, no 4 wheelers zooming all day etc) but only 10 minutes from Harp's, a mainstream known-brand grocery store chain (as opposed to a mom and pop one which could go out of business or not have enough things for sale etc). It was a mobile home, but in excellent condition, and the gravel road leading to it wasn't full of too many bumps, it was in fact rather smooth, level, and straight. It had 2 full-sized bedrooms, a good sized living room, a washer-dryer area, and a full-sized kitchen with a table and counter-space. Also, despite its secluded location, besides being close to a grocery store, it also had very good AT&T cell phone reception. We had found our new place going forward, a total winner. Kevin liked it as well. This is our intended new home for vacation going forward.
