We current have a Nikon D5000, a Nikon D40, and a Casio EX-Z750 (everyday/movie clips). We also have a Coolpix L11 we rarely use. The D5000 is set-aside as the "top drawer" SLR for my photography hobbyists pursuits. (I'd love a D300, but this is my "portable compromise.") The D40 is the "everyday SLR" for my wife to shoot kiddie pics and as an "always with you" SLR, we got this 07-09-2010. (We actually first purchased a D40 in June 2007 for my wife to take photos of our new child Helen, later I got a 2nd one for my own use, sold that to upgrade to a D40x. Later, after selling the 1st D40 and the D40x also gone, got another D40, then sold it for a D40x & used that for nearly a year. Then, we upgraded that to a D3000 for the extra AF points, only to then upgrade it to a 2nd D5000--only to then come back to a 4th (and final?) D40 again, as its smaller file sized helped what with my wife taking so many pictures with it.)

Bodies

† Nikon D5000. Acquired 9-14-2005 off Nikonians.Org, for $495 very lightly used (got it exactly 4 years after my Nikon D50, 1st Nikon d-SLR ever). It was an upgrade from D60, with more features and the same 12mp sensor from D90 & D300.

† Nikon D40. The 4th one we've owned, got it 07-09-2010. Having shot with a D40 back in 2007, then a D40x in June 2009, then upgraded to a D3000 (then a 2nd D5000) in May-June 2010, came back to the D40 in July 2010 for the smaller file sizes. (My wife takes way too many pictures and the resulting files really take up space, and won't ever be enlarged past 11x14 anyway.)
