Saschiz | Criţ - A Happy Surprise | Viscri

Viscri

After visiting Criţ, a partially paved back road was taken to Viscri. Like Criţ, the town was once most inhabited by Saxon Germans, The name Viscri is a corruption of Weißkirch, the local German dialect for white church. Today the about 20 German Saxons remain. Most of the population are Roma (gypsies).

Viscri dates from 1100. The fortified church, a World Heritage Site, is located on a hill at the northeast corner of the village.

Charles, Prince of Wales, is a patron of the Mihai Eminescu Trust, a Romanian conservation and restoration organization. In 2006, he bought and restored a 18th century Transylvanian Saxon house in Viscri and another in Mălâncrav to help protect the unique way of life that has existed for hundreds of years and promote sustainable tourism. He was scheduled to spend time at his Viscri home the week after I visited Viscri.
