On my last day of a 4 night stay in the small town of Telč (5,812), I took a pleasant morning train ride south to the even smaller town of Slavonice (2,671). The railway station is south of the town. A tree shaded parking area separates it from the town’s cemetery. A walking path runs along the side of the cemetery and connects to a street that leads to a bridge which crosses a small stream. The street then climbs to the main square, náměstí Míru which connects to náměstí Horní. The tourist office can be found at the center of the north side of náměstí Míru.

In 1880, the population of the town was 2,662, nearly the same as the current population. However, at that time, all but 8 were German-speaking. The number of Czechs grew slowly, but the German-speaking citizens remained the majority (79.4% in 1930) until they were expelled in June of 1945. Several of the town's renaissance buildings have sgraffito decorations. The oldest, done in 1545, is the second oldest in the Czech Republic. One in Prague dates from 1544. Náměstí Horní may have the richest collection of sgraffito decorated buildings in the country. For more infomation on the technique, click here.
