I first became interested in the work of Imre Makovecz from viewing Helen Betts’ photos of his work. So after spending a night in Cluj-Napoca, I had a taxi make a detour on the way to the train station. He was enthusiastic and told me of other modern churches on the same street. I knew of them but only had time for the New Reformed Church. The works of Imre Makovecz are the best known of Hungarian Organic Architecture. Here Makovecz paid tribute to tradition of wooden churches and wood carving in Romania, especially in Maramureș County, north of Cluj-Napoca.
