I had parked on the side of this forest road where Cleo and I went for a 3 hour walk. On the return, Cleo was ahead of me eager to get into the car. As she approached it, there was an almighty noise and great confusion - a wild turkey burst from the forest on the left and ran at Cleo, wing's outstretched, screeching and calling. Cleo ran away and the turkey followed!! The 'broken wing' ruse is used by quite a few bird species to draw predators away from their young. By acting as if injured the predator will chase the adult who will lure them far enough away (hopefully) that the young will be safe.
I called for Cleo to come to me and what you see in the right hand side of the image is Cleo running to me, and the wild turkey, thinking she was being chased, also running to me (so in fact, Cleo is not chasing the bird as it seems). At the last moment the turkey swerved and ran back toward the car. Obviously she had young very close by. We reached the car and instead of lingering for lunch, drove off, leaving her in peace!
