Mourning Cloak butterfly (Nymphalis antiopa) caterpillar

Ottawa East

This spiky creature was wandering across a busy trail so I moved it to the side. These caterpillars are found in large aggregations and can, unfortunately, be mistaken for gypsy moth larvae. This looks like a mature larva and I expect it was looking for somewhere to pupate.
