In late autumn I found the remains of a paper wasp nest on the ground, probably one made by Bald-faced Hornets. The intricacy of the nest itself is impressive. Hornet nests are large football size structures hanging from trees, sometimes on buildings. Inside the nest are several layers of these 'brood combs' in which the eggs are laid. The exterior is indeed paper, and the interior combs too, all made by wasps scraping slivers of wood from fences, decks, trees, wooden posts, whatever they can find that is easily accessible https://pbase.com/laroseforest/image/160869042), and then mixing the paper with saliva and creating the nest. Time-consuming and laborious work. Remarkable!
