The melanistic (black) phase of the grey squirrel. This colour is much more common around here than those with grey coats. One biologist speculates that the gene for the melanistic phase “must carry with it some unknown northern adaptation.” Another suggests that perhaps the black coat “acts as a kind of solar heater.”
