Painted lady (Vanessa cardui)

Larose Forest

It is very cold outside, -18c, with a windchill of -24, so I am warming up by looking at a photo of a Painted Lady butterfly who landed nearby on a warm Sept. day a few years back.

Lovely warm colours and it's in perfect condition basking in the sunshine. A great photo to see on a freezing day.

Handsome! This is so similar to our Vanessa kershawi (Australian Painted Lady). Indeed, V. cardui is occasionally known to turn up in Australia but is easily overlooked.
