Bird's nest fungi

Rockcliffe Park

A cluster of tiny bird's nest fungi on a twig. They are so called because if you look closely you can see they are nest shaped and in one, in the centre of the shot, you can see some tiny egg-like objects. These fungi are in the Puffball family. When it rains, the droplets hit these 'eggs' and cause them to release their spores. Some of the fungi are still covered by a fine membrane, not yet opened to reveal the 'eggs' or spore sacs, beneath.

Yet another fungi that leaves little imagination to its naming - and well shot to tell us that fact!

so just add water and they stir then...the little forms also remind of baked goods, perhaps fungi tarts..

How very interesting looking, and a great closeup of them. V.
