Two heads are better than one

Larose Forest

This Cicada doesn't really have two heads, although it looks like it. The head on the left is actually the nymphal skin from which the adult is slowly, slowly emerging. The bright, fresh head can be seen above the old case. It took this insect several hours to emerge in a painfully slow process. After, it sat on the tree trunk while its wings dried and hardened.

What a find! I haven't seen them around here in years but when my youngest son was about three years old we had an infestation. He would walk around with his big brothers and collect the dried skin and attach them to his shirt. Then they would all come in the house and try and freak me out. They must have because I don't remember ever having the presence of mind to take a photo of him covered in the cicada's shells!

This is fascinating. I hope only painful to watch, not painful for the cicada.
