Bald-faced hornet (Dolichovespula maculata) on stinkhorn fungus

Lavigne Park

This hornet along with a number of flies was on the side of a freshly emerged Ravenel's Stinkhorn fungus. The head of the stinkhorn is covered with a very foul-smelling slimy mass that attracts a number of insects. By crawling over the fungus to feed they then help transport the pores to other areas. The fungi grow on rotting wood.

You've done well to brave the hornet and the stink to document this insect "pollination" in action.

"foul-smelling slimy mass"...you might be able to attract them with a spoonful of Marmite...
