Wolf's milk slime mold (Lycogala epidendrum)

Lavigne Park

For the "Colourful October" challenge.

The Slime Molds were once considered to be part of the Fungi Kingdom, but no longer. The very fact that they can move around separates them from Fungi. In the case of these slime molds, they will move together (by means of chemical signals) to form a mass as above. If you poke these when young, they will produce a pink paste. As they age they turn a bronze colour. Slime molds are unique, often interestingly shaped and frequently in lovely colours.

Looks like they'd be good to eat, but "slime mold" doesn't sound too appealing. :o(

Very interesting information and very detailed great photo. I would have never imagined mold looked like this or that it could move itself - not just grow in quantity.

how intriguing...they look like soft eggs, or mutant peaches...who knew they could move too?...cool you included the shadow to show them in relief..
