False sphinx (Pheosia rimosa), #7922

Larose Forest

The caterpillar is usually known as the False Sphinx because the 'horn' on the end mimics that of the true sphinx caterpillars. The head on this guy is at the top. It is feeding on willow, which is abundant along the forest roads.

Beautiful capture. Reminds me of Heimlich from A Bug's Life. :-)

It took a while to work out which end was the head - and then I read your comment. It doesn't look like it is going hungry. The patterns on caterpillars are often intriguing; this one certainly is.
