I was delighted to see the elusive and secretive Fisher emerge out of the trees, linger for a few moments on the road, then run to the other side.
This photo tested my camera`s capabilities as this was as zoomed out as it could get, and even then I had to crop significantly.
Fisher have a bad reputation, completely uncalled for, and weird and totally untrue myths surround them. If you believed everything you read and hear about these animals in the non-scientific writings, you'd think you were dealing with something the size of a mountain lion, capable of taking down moose! Not true. These members of the Weasel family are related to mink, weasels, otter and pine martens. The larger wolverine lives well north of here and is rarely encountered in its native range. In all the decades I've been out in the woods I've only seen three fisher, but I see their tracks in winter much more often.
