Mourning cloak butterfly

Reveler Conservation Area

It was the first real taste of spring today, with temperatures at +14 or more and full sun. A gorgeous day. I went to the Reveler Conservation Area, south of Ottawa, hoping some of the overwintering butterflies might have been induced to come out and fly around. I saw 6 Mourning Cloaks (Camberwell Beauty), and a few Commas. There is still some snow and ice in the woods, but it is nowhere near as snowbound as some of the Ottawa woodlots.
