Emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis)

Fletcher Wildlife Garden

The notorious beetle that has decimated most of the ash trees in our area and many other locations in Ontario and the US. Accidentally imported from east Asia in the 1990s, probably in packing material. Bug Guide has this to say: "the EAB is considered to be among the most destructive forest insect pests to have been introduced into North America (Herms and McCullough, 2014)". It was first reported in SW Ontario, according to Bug Guide, in 2002. It has been in Ottawa for at least 10 years and the sheer speed at which ash trees died was formidable. However, hairy woodpeckers were especially happy, as they fed on the numerous emerald ash borer larvae in the ash trees. They are a beautiful insect, however!

It's a beautiful beetle. Too bad it's so destructive.

Good look at this beetle, hope the woodpeckers make short work of them. V

What a fiendish invader. I hope there was a hairy woodpecker around...! Pretty though.
