Darner dragonfly exuvia

Byrne Big Creek Nature Preserve

This is the shed skin, exuvia of a darner dragonfly. Before the transformation, this nymph would have made its way to some vegetation (in this case, a buttonbush) on which to cling prior to transforming to an adult dragonfly. Mostly these are found in vegetation at the edge of or in the water, or very close by. This one was a considerable distance from water.
