I noticed this tiny, intact, sawfly cocoon on a dogwood shrub in the forest, today. A short while later, I found another one. This one is still unopened, but the next one I found had the top neatly sliced off, and therefore is probably from last summer, but still looking in impeccable shape. The cocoons are tough and fibrous and hard to the touch. It may be about 1/4 inch in size.
A sawfly is a type of wasp, not a fly, as the name would suggest!!
