Eastern comma butterfly eggs (Polygonia comma)

At home

I watched an eastern comma butterfly lay eggs on several stinging nettles in my garden yesterday. I grow the nettles for just this purpose and in the past have had red admirals also lay their eggs on the plant. I hope the eggs survive, but often they don't, eaten by any number of predatory insects. Notice how the eggs are stacked, one on top of the other!

Try doing that with hen's eggs! I guess they must be sticky? Fascinating.

Isn't that fascinating! I wouldn't have thought these were anything from a living creature. Excellent closeup of of them, Christine. V.

Amazing photo and explanation. You must be one of only a few people who welcome stinging nettles into their garden !

an amazing phenomenon well observed - we have plenty of stinging nettles, but have not seen a Comma yet this year
