Brown mantidfly (Climaciella brunnea)

West Ottawa

This medium sized insect (about 30mm) is also called Wasp Mantidfly, because of its resemblance to a wasp. To me, however, it always seems more like a cross between a wasp and a praying mantis! Although they are often on flowers feeding on nectar, they mostly prey on other insects. I frequently find them on milkweed blossoms.

Sounds like a danger for the butterflies that feed on milkweed! Fabulous shot! V

Ohhh, very cool. I agree with your impression --- something a 6 - 8 year old boy would conjur up.
