Bald-faced hornet (Dolichovespula maculata) scrapings on wooden fence

At home

I watched a bald-faced hornet scrape minuscule shavings of wood from the fence and carry away. These will be used to make their distinctive big paper nests. They are amazing structures... imagine, they are actually making paper by chewing the fibre and then painstakingly spreading it out, tiny bit by tiny bit...
