Scorpion fly (Panorpa), male

Warwick Forest

Summer for me means being able to find and photograph lots of insects, such as this scorpion fly, which is such a fascinating looking critter! Despite their name, they are not stinging insects nor are they poisonous. Their name comes from the resemblance of the male's curled over abdomen to the stinger of a scorpion.
