This enormous pile of ruffed grouse scat, some of which had clearly been there for awhile, piled on one side of a log, indicated that this was no doubt a 'drumming post' for the male grouse. In fact, a grouse took off nearby as we came down the trail. Male grouse sit up on logs in the spring and drum to attract females... the sound is familiar to all who walk the woods in spring, and evocative of the season.
