These are native to Ontario, but grow in very limited numbers southwest of Ottawa in a few locations. They are more commonn in southern Ontario. However, they grow well in the rockery at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden.
I'm amazed they survive your winter - and are native. In Australia, to which they are not native, they grow feral in mainly sub-tropical regions, and I recall seeing Prickly Pear plantations in Peru.
