Shaggy mane (Coprinus comatus)

QU Biological Station. This is one of the most readily recognized mushrooms. The inset shows a shaggy mane cut open. The pinkish colouration indicates it is just beginning to age. When young, the inside is as white as the outside. These mushrooms quickly dissolve into a blacky inky mass, giving rise to the other common name of Inky Caps.
