Scorpion fly (Mecoptera)

Cumberland Forest. These intriguing insects are in their own order, Mecoptera, versus flies which are in the Order Diptera. They get their common name not because they are poisonous or because they sting, but because the male's abdomen curls over his back, like a scorpion. They feed primarily on dead insects, though a few are predators on living insects. To see the scorpion like "tale" on the male, click here: http://www.pbase.com/laroseforest/image/125394986
