Leaf-footed Bug (Acanthocephala terminalis)

This is a really large bug (over 20mm), much bigger than the other members of this Leaf-footed Bug family (Coreidae). In this photo you can see the flattened hind legs which give this group their common name. We were exploring a very damp, mossy cliff face under a heavy dark canopy of trees, when I saw two orange tips moving under a rocky ledge. Couldn't figure out what it was until I stuck my finger under and this guy popped out. Had to use a flash for this shot.

The legs do look like a lot like leaves. Very interesting beetle and image. V.

Great shot to get this extraordinary detail. Brave you, sticking your finger under rocks. No fear? V
