Short-tailed weasel/Ermine (Mustela erminea)

Marlborough Forest. As I was walking along the trail I noticed a slight movement out of the corner of my eye. Stopping, saw a little hole under a cedar tree and thought a chipmunk might have popped down. I waited, thinking the chipmunk, if that is what it was, might pop out again. Instead, out popped this short-tailed weasel! It was not the slightest bit upset, and continued to go in and out of the tunnel which led to an opening on the side of the cedar. It popped out of one hole, then the other, and eventually emerged altogether and ran along a log before vanishing. I waited for quite some time, but it never returned. I'm always amazed at how tiny these creatures are, every time I see them up close.

Great capture, lovely image V. We encountered one of these little fellers on one of our hikes up in Kananaskis Country, it kept hopping around us and was difficult to capture on film but when we moved away we realised that one of us was standing over its exit hole!! LOL

I've never encountered a weasel and had no idea they were this cute. Their name has such a bad connotation I would have expected an evil looking critter. Super close up. V.
