Eye-spotted ladybeetle (Anatis mali)

Found this ladybeetle hiding in a rolled up leaf in the York Regional Forest, near Newmarket. When I touched the leaf, the beetle crawled out onto my hand. These are relatively big beetles as far as ladybeetles go (about 9 mm), quite noticeably larger than the usual asian ladybeetles and seven-spotted ladybeetles we get around here. These beetles get darker and darker with age, until the spots become less visible. LIke most ladybeetles, they feed on aphids.

What a super-dooper Ladybeetle. Another wonderful find. The coloring on the carapace reminds me of Japanese urushi lacquer work.
